My lifelong dream was to complete a large enough body of artwork to support a solo exhibition. That dream came true with my show at the Pawtucket Arts Collaborative gallery from July 15-23, 2023. The title of the show was FACE IT! Recognizing the Need for Social Change. My goal for this collection of artwork was to explore how the urgent issues of our times are impacting people and our planet. I dedicated the exhibition to my teacher and mentor, Enrico (Henry) Pinardi. FACE IT! included 20 large scale mixed media drawings dedicated to the themes of Black Lives Matter, Climate Change, Immigration, and Women in Crisis, 10 small portrait drawings depicting the victims of the Tops Supermarket mass shooting in Buffalo, NY, and three oil paintings of mothers and their daughters posing as goddesses. All of the work can be seen in detail on this website.
The title of the exhibition, FACE IT! can be interpreted in three possible ways:
1.) Look at it, don't look away.
2.) Come to grips with it, as in face the truth.
3.) Humanize it by putting a real face on it.
We cannot help but feel empathy and compassion when we truly face the reality of how our fellow humans have fared in the face of some disastrous situations and societal constraints.
